Standing on your own feet is good for you, both metaphorically and physically. Yet standing physically for a whole working day is damn hard....and not as healthy as one might think. Standing desks got a lot of media attention in the recent years – it seemed that anything but sitting on a chair would be considered better than sitting. Ergonomic journals and office furniture manufacturers all bought the idea of a standing desk being the savior from the sedentary lifestyle – the plague of the modern age.
What many seem to ignore are the side effects of long-term standing. Human legs and body are biologically fine-tuned for running and walking - activities our species was engaged in for thousands of years. An 8-hour standing day with short breaks for lunch and coffee is just the same anatomic nonsense as a day spent sitting. Our bodies balance themselves when they are in motion and a long term static position quickly becomes a challenge. You have to stay focused on your neck, shoulders and your core to keep them actively engaged to maintain a correct position if you work standing. With decreased attention to your posture the body will eventually sag and you will quickly find yourself slouching and hunching your back before you even know it. Besides, there is plenty of medical evidence proving increased stress and fatigue of leg veins that comes from being in a static upright position for a prolonged period of time. I have a friend who's selling tickets to tourists on the streets of Vienna, essentially having to stand all day engaging with potential customers. At some point he ended up buying those medical compression socks to keep his legs intact. The one good thing about standing desks that came out in recent corporate efficiency studies are status meetings. According to efficiency gurus, meetings held at standing desks tend to be very effective and very short........I wonder why. I will not cover the option of a thread-mill with an integrated laptop holder. The idea of walking / running and doing meaningful work on a computer at the same time is just absurd.
We at LEVUS are on a quest to design an ergonomic workstation for long-term efficient computer work. Our goal is nothing less but your ultimate working comfort, deep focus, and concentration without negative side-effects to your health. To achieve that we had to abandon the commonly accepted ideas such as “chair”, “table”, “sitting” or “standing” altogether. LEVUS workstation is a fundamentally different way to workplace design. In a regular home/office environment the table with a laptop and a monitor come first - you have to position your body around them, no matter whether you’re comfortable about it or not. The LEVUS ecosystem puts your body to a comfortable position first – the equipment is secondary and is placed around you. The exact positioning of the monitors, mouse table, laptop holder, headrest and your working angle is adjusted to your individual physiological parameters.
The way we work has changed – so should the physical environment we work in. The classical chair-desk combination is just not good enough for the new digital age. An ergonomic workstation is a must-have for all of us seeking deep focus and high productivity.
